2nd Team Beat Napier on Penalties
A week of snow has ground football in Scotland to a standstill. However, the indoor 3G facility at Oriam provided the perfect setting for the 2s SSS cup tie against rival Edinburgh side Napier. The match was evenly fought, with both teams making good use of the large pitch. In the first half, Edinburgh had several shots on goal, but the Napier goalkeeper pulled off some good saves to deny Lily Chubb and Amy Gilroy. The second half was a continued battle with both teams fighting to secure their place in the next round of the cup. As the full-time whistle approached and the score still stood at 0-0, the prospect of penalties loomed. There was to be no extra time and the players assembled on the half-way line in preparation for the shoot-out. First up was Bailey Bender who scored a clinical penalty for the 2s. The pressure was on for Napier to match this, but super keeper Amy Schmoys denied the striker her goal by making a superb two-footed save. Edinburgh were now 1-0 up on penalties and Carolina calmly made this 2-0. Napier fought back to score and brought the score to 2-1. Eva Steele then stepped up to coolly slot the ball into the back of the net. The next Napier penalty taker shot and put the ball over the bar. If Edinburgh scored this, they had won! Amy Gilroy was up next and overcame the pressure to secure the 2s a fantastic 4-1 victory. Next game is set to be against Glasgow 1s with the 2s hoping to replicate their performance the previous week against this side to progress in the SSS cup.
