Match Reports: 1s Win Away to Glasgow

Yesterday saw EUWAFC 1st team meet Glasgow for the second time in the 2016-17 Scottish 1A League, but this time away from home. The first game saw Edinburgh come away with a comfortable 5-0 win in very windy conditions, and they hoped to match this win with another in Glasgow.

The game started off slowly, with both sides looking relatively evenly matched. Edinburgh showed promising glimpses with Margaux Durand-Watson making some good runs down the wings and putting the ball into dangerous areas.

Edinburgh then took the lead with a short pass back by the Glasgow defence capitalised on by Colette Cavanagh, who calmy slotted it past the goalkeeper. Little over 5 minutes later, captain Courtney Macavoy got Edinburgh's second from a cut back from Durand-Watson. With less than 30 minutes played, it was 2-0 to the away side.

On the brink of halftime, Edinburgh got their third, with a fantastic diagonal through-ball from Ella Devlin which was met by Beth Macleod who finished it off. A couple of minutes later, Glasgow got one back in a short range shot going into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.

The second half saw Edinburgh make one change: Carla Boyce came on to make her debut for the university, whilst Colette Cavanagh came off after a strong performance as striker.

Not long into the second half, and Durand-Watson got a goal, from a dangerous run down the wing. Edinburgh were playing more comfortably now, and 3 changes were made, with Laila Juul-Dam, Kirsty Maden and Zuzana Psenakova coming on for Lily Chubb, Ella Devlin and Jane Marshall.

Edinburgh came close but could not finish on some occasions, with a brave header by Macleod being cleared off the line by the Glasgow defence. The home side threatened with a few free kicks in dangerous areas, but could not get another goal back. A long range shot from Glasgow was tipped over the bar by Charlotte Parker-Smith in the Edinburgh goal.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh increased their goal tally with a brilliant long range throw taken quickly by Boyce, picked up by Macleod and slotted in to the Glasgow net. Glasgow threatened at full time with a free kick just outside of the box, but this was saved by Parker-Smith.

Overall a strong performance from the away side, in what always proves to be a tough game away to Glasgow, but a good 3 points to take back to Edinburgh.
